Be captivated by the smoky, sultry sound of singer Lulu Fall whose new CD, “Anything But Ordinary,” well describes this genre-defying young artist. Ms. Fall draws on her singular experiences as a first-generation American and sings from the heart. Flavored by her West African heritage, her sound was nurtured locally at Duke Ellington School for the Performing Arts then launched nationally with a popular CD, “Lulu’s Back in Town.” Appearing with guitarist Andy Fahs, Lulu will offer a concert of original songs and lovable jazz standards.

Enjoy an inspiring prelude to your Sunday matinee with a unique performance from dancers from Project Dance/DC Team. Project Dance was founded by Cheryl Cutlip in New York City after 9/11 with a mission to bring a message of hope and healing to the city through the universal language of dance. The vision has grown, and Project Dance now serves dancers worldwide through classes, performances and events, including a major 2011 Washington, DC event. This unique Café Concert includes dancers Clarissa Stroud, Masters Movement Dance Company; Richelle Dickerson, Worship Explosion Dance Company; Ronya-Lee Anderson, Dancing by the Power Ministries and Angella Foster, alight dance theater.

Be able to say “I knew them when” after delighting to the traditional Irish tunes of Og Ceol, a duo of teen musicians – fiddler Jamie Sandel and Irish flute and whistle player Malinda Reese. Intersecting with folk guitarist Oran Sandel, Og Ceol will share the tunes they’ve learned at the knee of players in both Ireland and the US, but with a distinctive, contemporary twist. Other festival musicians, including percussionist Tom Teasley, will sit in on this lively session, too. Enjoy a unique festival collaboration of musicians of diverse ages, traditions and styles.
 
 

God’s Miracles Gospel Quintet

Enjoy a Café Concert intersection of classical to contemporary sounds from outstanding students of guitar. Levine School of Music, based in Washington, DC, is one of the nation's leading nonprofit community music schools and is the largest "All-Steinway" community music school in this country. Founded in 1976, Levine serves more than 3,500 students on campuses in Northwest and Southeast DC, Maryland and Virginia, with 900 of these students receiving subsidized music instruction through Levine’s scholarship and outreach programs. Levine offers individual and ensemble instruction in more than 20 instruments and voice taught by an international roster of more than 150 faculty-artists.

This small ensemble featuring the virtuoso musicians of “The President’s Own” will offer a sampling of composers and styles, with something sure to entice every music aficionado. Founded in 1798 by an Act of Congress, “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band is America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization. “The President’s Own” encompasses the United States Marine Band, Marine Chamber Orchestra, and Marine Chamber Ensembles, and performs regularly at the White House and for more than 500 public performances across the nation each year.

Be there when artists from over 50 performing groups celebrate the launch of our multi-disciplinary, multi-ethnic, multi-generational festival. Move to the music of world jazz with Trio Grabielismo and enjoy libations as you discover where you are and where your journey might take you during INTERSECTIONS.

Late Night Dance Parties!

Get inside the sounds of three festival performing companies at a trio of late night dance party events. Be there when the Sprenger Stage transforms and festival artists offer up their best tunes for intersecting on the stage-turned-dance floor. A cash bar will be open. Be sure to bring your ID for the bar. (Under 21s welcome.)
